PAS 96:2010 defines the requirements for the detection and defeat of malicious attacks on the supply chain. These measures are essential for the cooperation with and export activities to countries such as the USA. Their objective is the effective implementation of HACCP for food safety.
The food and drink industry is naturally vulnerable to attack. The main threats are malicious contamination with toxic materials, sabotage of the supply chain and malevolent use of food and drink for terrorist or criminal purposes. A successful attack could disrupt business and undermine brands, and could lead to illness and death. Even the threat of an attack could be problematic. Adopting the appropriate measures through a threat assessment based on the TACCP (Threat Assessment Critical Control Point) methodology, PAS 96:2010 offers guidance on deterring, detecting and defeating malicious attack on food and drink supplies. PAS 96 was developed by the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) in collaboration with The British Standards Institution (BSI) in 2008. The original edition made use of preventative strategies within the World Health Organisation guidance on the Terrorist Threat to Food, which was revised in May 2008. This new 2010 edition of PAS96 has been reviewed by relevant stakeholders and amendments made to ensure its continued relevance and accuracy. PAS 96:2010 provides guidance on best practices for defeating malicious actions and focuses on the following sectors:
